Growing Oakland’s Economy Equitably
Every community deserves equal opportunity and resources to thrive—especially as COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted the economic future of women and communities of color. Loren has led the fight to lift up and empower every Oaklander, especially those who have been disregarded for far too long.
- Launched East Side Oakland Ventures (ESO Ventures), which uses an $8 million investment to foster entrepreneurs from historically disadvantaged communities, providing the confidence, competence and capital they need to succeed
- Authored successful Local Business Empowerment through Contracting ordinance and resolution that reduced race- and gender-based contract disparities
- Led community engagement effort for the historic guaranteed income pilot, which provided 600 families, including 300 families in East Oakland, with an unconditional $500 per month for 18 months
- Authored successful resolution to fund a new commercial kitchen for Arroyo Viejo Recreation Center with a $100K Google grant, providing cooking amenities and increasing access to healthy, nutritious food to the community
- Established Liberation Park and its Akoma Market—an outdoor dining and retail venue featuring Black-owned East Oakland businesses and a community hub with Black art and cultural performances, hot meal distribution, COVID-19 testing, and a community ambassador program
- Advocated for the Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District (EIFD) to fund redevelopment efforts across the city, including the Howard Terminal development proposed for development by the Oakland A’s
- Successfully championed budget allocations to launch Business Development Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) in East Oakland to match BID efforts in other parts of Oakland
- Developed a Cannabis Equity Rebate Program to improve the success of Oakland cannabis businesses that are operated by those adversely impacted by the war on drugs
